What is it with boys and footballs?
Wiley and his buddies like to play tackle football outside on the lawn. They were hammin' it up in some of these pictures.

The other day Wiley came home from school and three of his buddies came over to play tackle football. They came in sat down for a rest and a treat and started taking about the "game". Lincoln asked,"do you guys want the eagles to win or the cougars to win?"
I had to leave the room I was laughing in amazement at the conversation topic of five year olds. Since when do these little guys follow the games? How can they possibly have an opinion regarding college football teams? Each boy said which team they wanted to win. My mouth at this time had dropped to the floor. How could Wiley possibly know what he was talking about?
Later that night I asked Wiley the same question hoping to get the same lively conversation that he had participated in earlier.
"Mom, I like cougars, but I think eagles are cool, they can like fly and swoop around. Birds are cool."
I chuckled all night and was relieved to discover that although one boys was really asking about the college teams, at least my boy was sharing his opinion on just the animal he liked best. Thank goodness. Wiley, don't grow up too fast.

Flash Back Friday
2005 Halloween
This is the picture from our very first post. Ben is grapes, Wiley is a Power Ranger, Rosie is a Lamb, and I am Mary (as in Mary had a little lamb.)Oh now that I think about it I went as Bo Peep. . .
Ben has strange ideas about costumes. He always ends up being something a little more unheard of. Those pictures to follow.

Lake Powell Trip
Wiley always finds time for a nap in the cubby hole in the boat.
Wiley finally warmed up to the idea of riding the yellow banana. He really started to enjoy it. Shown here are the boys and the Dads.
Ben and Sharalee at the front of the boat, what you can't see are the two kids laying on us catching some ZZZZzzzzz.

Flashback Friday on a Saturday?
This Flashback is dedicated to the Dyer clan because a good portion of us got together this week for a birthday party. We had a good night. We love to get together and talk about ourselves. ha ha It's what us Dyers do best.
I think my mom's vest says it all here.
p.s. If you look closely you can see my rub-on tattoo.
I love that the boys are all wearing the check shirts.
Here is our serious version. The puff in Kerianne's sleeve is just awesome.

"Flashback Friday"
Ali has started a new trend with the Flashback Friday Pictures. If you want to learn more about her check out her blog under Troy and Ali. This first Flashback is in honor of my second year of College and the roommates I loved so much.
Since my second year of school, I've learned what a dork I was. Chasing boys and making secret trips to the candy machine were just a few of the dumb things I did.
Luckily, real friends forgive the stupidity right? Tell me I'm forgiven!? The only thing I might have as collateral /blackmail is some pictures of us at an uppity Princess party were I forced everyone to wear awesome 1970-80s dresses. I shall save those pictures for another time.
Lindi, Ali, Shara, Kelly, Michelle and Merideth. And now 9 years later we have 16 kids between us. Can that be right? Wow that's a lot. I'm not really doing my share am I?

A Busy June:
Our First Triathlon
For two months we worked on our triathlon training. We had a great time. We were even able to convince a few family members to join us in our efforts. Ben looks tough! I won't show any of my action shots because I look quite dorky and wimpy. I felt tough though, does that count?
The TREK:

Ben and I were asked to be Aunts and Uncles for the Pioneer TREK in Wyoming. We had a great time, but we froze in the nights and were sweating during the days. Pictured is our handcart with our kids we were to look after during the four days. Good thing we had been training for the triathlon otherwise I'm not sure we would have lasted all those miles walking.

So on June 11, my cousin Amy sent out to all the world the 100 day challenge.
I happen to be a goal setter myself, but I really love the way she set up the 100 day challenge. To learn more about the challenge click on the "Amy and Brian's blog" in my cousin's link area. She wrote:

Do you accept...
THE HUNDRED DAY CHALLENGE?
I would like to issue a challenge to anyone interested. The rules are easy and the results are amazing. In celebration of tomorrow (June 12th) which marks the end of my own hundred day challenge, I am sharing the wealth. Here's the background on it: Our son came home from his hundredth day of school party with a journal that said: "One hundred days ago, I couldn't write. Now I can sound out words and I can write. And I can make my fives the right way. I like school." OK, the spelling was a little choppier, but it struck us how he had gone from unable to read, write or do math, to being able to do all three in one hundred days. This got my husband thinking. If a Kindergartner can learn so much in 100 days, why not us? And he put himself on a hundred day challenge. Then he got me started, and I set the goal of working on "that book" I always intended to write...and 99 days later, I have made incredible headway on something that otherwise would have gone untouched. (Entire plot is outlined, book is named, characters established, and 55 pages of single spaced writing are completed.)
So here is the challenge: Choose a goal to work on daily for 100 days. It could be ANYTHING--healthier eating or exercise, taking a class of some sort, finishing an unfinished project, practicing patience or other attributes, learning a new skill, language, instrument, etc., reading books, cooking, playing with your kids, deepening spirituality, keeping up on your home, accomplishing a goal at work, taking time for yourself...you get the idea. Anything you would like to tackle for 100 days. Once you have chosen the goal, you simply make a conscientious effort to work on it daily for 100 days. THEN....report back on September 18th and share your success story!
Are you game??? My goal for my next 100 day challenge is to get 100 people on the challenge...so I hope you'll be willing to join Brian and I. Invite your friends and family too. In the comments, state your name and your goal, and from there it's up to you. I don't think you'll regret the decision to take this on!!!
Happy Hundred!

Disneyland 2007
We had a great time at Disneyland and California Adventure. The best part was watching Wiley's reaction. When we arrived at the park, the first thing he wanted to do was meet Mickey Mouse. In fact, he refused to do anything until we did so. We think it was a gesture of good manners -- you know, like checking in with the host before enjoying the rest of the party.
After meeting Mickey, Wiley started trying to absorb the whole Disneyland experience. His little head was working overtime to figure what was real or what was fake. He would ask if something was a robot or a costume. (Later, on the scary rides, he would console himself by having us reassure him that "they were only robots." Somehow, that made him more comfortable.)
Because Ben and I didn't want to only go on sissy rides while there we decided that we would try and see what he thought of the larger more exciting rides. We tried a number of strategies in order to make this happen. First we tried to reason with him. Then we tried coercion. Eventually, we just dodged his questions and tried to distract him long enough -- usually with food -- in order to get him on the ride. Finally, we just gave him no choice. After all, Disneyland is for the kids -- but only to a point.
Still, he enjoyed the experience, even the scary rides. For instance, after we got off Star Tours, he turned to Ben and said, "Daddy, are we back in Disneyland now?" After seeing the Stars-Wars-themed gift shop after the ride, he consented going on the ride again (probably thinking that was the only way back in). When he got on the ride for the second time, after Ben had assured him that the ride never actually leaves the park -- or Earth, for that matter -- Wiley asked the attendant, "Excuse me? Excuse me? Do we go into space on this ride?" The Star Tours attendant, opting to remain in character, assured him that we did, after which he turned to Ben and gave him his patented "what are these lies you're feeding me" look. Is it any wonder that kids don't trust their parents?
Wiley's favorite rides were Buzz Lightyear, Soarin' Over California, Alice in Wonderland, Winnie the Pooh, Brother Bear's Playland and, of course, Pirates of the Carribean, which he rode 7 times. The parents were so tired of riding Pirates of the Carribean, in fact, that we started taking turns and playing other games in order to keep ourselves entertained. For instance, we put together a pool to see who could guess how long the ride takes from start to finish (17 minutes, 30 seconds).
Classic shot of Wiley with a Character. He could spot them easily, but he was judicious about the ones he chose to have his picture taken with. He's sort of a snob that way -- he probably gets it from his parents. (Then again, remember that Wiley prefers salmon and brown rice to chicken and fries.)
Wiley spent much of his time on Ben's lap or mine. His eyes were always wide open, just taking everything in. This look is what was always on his face on the first ride. The second time on the Jungle Cruise he started relaxing and talking.
This is Isaac and Alyssa James. They are family. We love the James family because they are always up for a trip and they make all of our trips so fun. Over the last 7-ish years of marriage there is no other family that we have vacationed more with. I guess you could call them our traveling buddies. By the way, this photograph is from one of our very first rides, the "Tea Cups," or as we like to call them in the Welch family, the "Pee Cups." Alas, to get the full story on that moniker you will have to talk to Ben's younger brother Aaron, who christened them -- literally -- several years ago.
One of the first things we did was go to Jedi training. Wiley was one of the many chosen to participate in the Jedi school. The Jedi master taught him a routine with the lightsaber and everything was going well until Darth Vader and Darth Maul showed up and started recruiting for the dark side. The Jedi students were supposed to fight one of the two, but as soon as they arrived Wiley put away his light saber and started chewing nervously on his fingertips, which means he is either excited or terrified. In this case, we guessed the latter. Ultimately, he chose not to fight to the and instead retired to one corner to watch his fellow students.
Afterward, we were worried that this experience might scar him for life with respect to Star Wars, but fifteen minutes after we left, he was absolutely jubilant. Thank goodness children have such short memories. Also, any concern about his affection for Star Wars was put to rest after he chose a Luke Skywalker Transformer from the Star Tours gift shop as his special Disneyland souvenir. After the purchase, we told him that he couldn't play with it until after we left the park. Not surprisingly, as soon as we walked out of the store, he said "I'm tired of Disneyland; let's go back to the car." It was 9:30 a.m.
